The future of The Maine Campus is in serious jeopardy, and it needs physical support from its readers at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at 102 Murray Hall on campus.

Because the college newspaper of the University of Maine does not have enough funds to print more issues after this week, even after reducing publication to weekly from “thrice-weekly,” the General Student Senate voted at its meeting two weeks ago to donate $10,000 to the paper.

The resolution sponsoring this donation was rescinded by the cabinet. Their veto must be supported by 2/3 of the senators at this week’s meeting. However, we must ensure that the 2/3 majority remains in favor of the original resolution granting The Campus $10,000. In other words, they must vote against the veto.

The students are the constituents of the senators, and it is the obligation of the senators to vote on the behalf of the students. If enough students are physically at the meeting to prove they care about The Maine Campus’ survival, then the donation would most likely pass.

This will be a small feat for The Maine Campus. The donation will not solve all the problems existing at the paper. However, because the donation has been put to question by the GSS cabinet, we need a reasonable turnout to reinforce to the senators that the students want The Maine Campus to continue publication.
