Ever find yourself grooving down the hallway to the latest hip-hop tracks from J-Lo or Jay Z?
This semester, hallway dancers can refine their groove skills on campus with one of UMaine’s own.
Michelle Poulin, a kinesiology and physical education major from Waterville, is planning to launch a hip-hop dance class. Poulin will be teaching hour-long classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays each week this semester. The times and location have not yet been determined.
Originally an interior design and architectural studies major at UMass Amherst, Poulin made the jump to KPE this semester after a class called My Body, My Health piqued her interest.
Poulin developed dexterity and balance when she began ballet and jazz for gymnastics at age 10. Hip-hop dance, on the other hand, is all about expression for Poulin.
“Hip-hop lets me express attitude,” Poulin said.
Poulin continued on with her dance throughout school and is currently teaching a hip-hop dance class at Colby College in her hometown. This past summer she taught the same class at Champions Fitness Center, also in Waterville. When she graduates, Poulin hopes to start a holistic and wellness center either in the Southern states or abroad.
“When I dance it’s a very emotional experience, and it’s therapeutic for me,” Poulin said. “I always get to relieve stress and it makes my spirit feel good.”
In her classes, Poulin will focus on the choreography of the latest hip-hop and dance moves, many of which are plucked out of local clubs and programming on
