Women's hockey team wins, men's and women's basketball fall to Stony Brook

Women’s ice hockey: The University of Maine scored three times in the third period to defeat the University of Connecticut 4-2 in ECAC hockey action Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

UMaine junior Nicole Munro recorded two points, including a game-winning goal as the Black Bears improved to 8-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in ECAC East. Kim Berry and Laura Stosky each scored for the visitors who dropped to 8-9-1, 5-4.

York, Maine’s Amanda Cronin made 24 saves to earn her third win of the season. Shannon Murphy recorded 22 saves for UConn.

UMaine returns to action Wednesday Jan. 9 when the Black Bears host Boston College at 7 p.m. at Alfond Arena.

Men’s basketball: The University of Maine men’s basketball team lost to Stony Brook University, 68-65, Sunday afternoon, dropping to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in America East. The Seawolves improved to 2-12 overall and 1-2 in America East.

Errick Greene, who led UMaine with 24 points, missed a three-point attempt as time ran out.

UMaine’s Justin Rowe was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 63-62 lead with 52 seconds left. Rowe had a remarkable game, setting a school record with nine blocked shots.

He also grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 15 points, narrowly missing becoming UMaine’s first player to record a triple double.

Stony Brook’s Dawud Munir made two free throws with 45 seconds left to give Stony Brook University a 64-63 lead it would not relinquish, its first since the 9:34 mark of the second half.

UMaine returns to action on Jan. 11 and 13 with America East games at Vermont and Albany.

Women’s basketball: Despite a season-high 23 points from Heather Ernest, the University of Maine women’s basketball team lost its first America East game of the season 60-52 at Stony Brook University Sunday afternoon.

The Black Bears dropped to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in America East on the year while host Stony Brook improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0, while winning its first America East game.

UMaine received some solid post play from Ernest who shot 50 percent from the field, hitting eight of 16 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second straight and fourth double-double of the season. First-year forward Monica Peterson added 11 points while playing just 22 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Seawolves, who led most of the game, were bolstered by 19 points from Sherry Jordan. Jill George added 11 points and 16 rebounds. Theresa LoParrino was one of 15 from the field but hit 10 of 12 from the line for 13 points in 40 minutes.

UMaine returns to Orono this week to play host to Vermont and Albany on Jan. 10 and 12.
