Name the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. Who was the only boxer to win a heavyweight title on a foul?

These and 58 other questions were posed to 25 UMaine students who participated in the first-ever Intramural Sports Trivia Contest on Jan. 29. Participants took a written test composed of 15 questions in each of four categories: football, baseball, basketball and miscellaneous.

Jason Straetz of Phi Eta Kappa was the high scorer on the written test. The top eight scorers advance to the Tournament of Champions, Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Coe Room of Memorial Union. The other top scorers advancing to the Tournament of Champions include Adam Boynton, Jake Metzler, Derek Simhowits, Matt Moore, Chris Wacome, Tim Bonenfant and Todd Hinds. Top woman scorer was Terrilyn Lebel.

(Answers: Archie Griffin of the Ohio State University is the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner and the boxer was Max Schmelling).

The Free Throw Contest will be held Monday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Gym. Enter on site. The Intramural Sports Indoor Track Meet is scheduled for Feb. 12, in the Fieldhouse. The UMaine Ultimate Club traveled to Fredericton, New Brunswick on Feb. 2 and 3, to participate in the competitive division of the 8th Annual Fruit Bowl. Six teams competed in the 6-on-6 competition (four men and two women on each team). UMaine went 5-1-1, winning its first ever Fruit Bowl Championship, defeating SPAWN in the championship game 12-10. Teams from Quebec City, Fredericton and Halifax also competed in the Fruit Bowl.

Ultimate is one of about 20 active UMaine sports clubs. Sports Clubs compete on a non-varsity level with teams from other universities and colleges. Other active UMaine sports clubs include: the Blade Society, jui jitsu, shotokan, men’s and women’s rugby, men’s and women’s lacrosse, tennis, cycling, mountain biking, baseball, hackey sack, hip hop, volleyball, wrestling and Nordic skiing. If interested in any of these clubs, contact Thad Dwyer for practice and membership information at 581-1081.

Dave Anderson will be speaking on Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in Neville 101 about adventures in Patagonia. This free presentation is sponsored by Maine Bound and Recreation Programs. Dave Anderson spent more than 14 weeks exploring Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina during the 2000/01 climbing season. Join Anderson for a multi-media show about his climbs, including several climbs of the rock spires in the Fitroy Massif. The flora and fauna in this harsh environment are both striking and unique. The human history of El Chalten is no less striking. For information about Dave Anderson’s presentation or any Maine Bound program, telephone the Maine Bound office.
