The University of Maine men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the College of Holy Cross Saturday afternoon in Orono.
The women’s team, with 12 individual winners, won by a score of 105-72. Brooke Deforte and Danielle Donovan were the only double winners for UMaine. Deforte won the 60-yard dash, Donovan the 1000-meter run, and both were part of the Black Bear 4×440 relay team. Deforte led the team with 13 points and Sadie Shaffer followed with 11, including a win in the triple jump.
Other winners for UMaine included: Silvia Scaldaferri (200-meter dash), Nicole Pelletier (800-meter run), Vanessa Allen (3000-meter run), Nicole Binette (60-yard hurdles), Claire Poliquin (high jump), Gail Aloisio (pole vault), Jennifer Puiia (long jump), Katherine Page (shot put) and Julie Williams (weight throw).
UMaine’s 4×440 team of Deforte, Puiia, Donovan and Sarah LaPerle won with a time of 4:13.48. UMaine 4×880 relay team of Suzanne Hussey, Amy Potvin, Heather Jovanelli and Meg Brunton was also successful.
Caitlyn Mead (400-meter run), Heather Bain (500-meter run) and Kaitlyn Wright (1-mile run) were the only Holy Cross winners.
The UMaine men’s team also had 12 individual winners, and defeated Holy Cross by a score of 110-70. Nate Holmes, winner of the 60-yard dash and the 60-yard hurdles, joined Derek Semple, Brett McIntire and Gabe Rivard as double winners for the Black Bears.
Other winners on the men’s side for UMaine included: Andy Caron (1-mile run), Kenneth Bettis (500-meter run), Joseph Luchini (3000-meter run), Andy Roy (high jump), Adam Caldwell (pole vault) and Justin Drew (triple jump).
UMaine’s 4×440 relay team of Joel Evans, Brandon Arbour, Semple and McIntire took first in a time of 3:26.41. UMaine’s 4×880 relay team of Bettis, Rivard, Nolan Tobey and Paul Rupprecht won in a time of 8:01.94.
Dwayne Henclewood (shot put), Andre Thibeault (weight throw), and Ryan Kerrigan (1000-meter run) were winners for Holy Cross.
Members of the men’s and women’s track teams will be in action this Saturday, Feb. 16, at the America East Championships at Boston University.
