Women’s hockey has hands full at ninth-ranked New Hampshire

The University of Maine women’s hockey team had a rough time at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. this weekend. The Black Bears dropped a pair of games to the ninth-ranked team in the country, the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

Sunday: With the score tied at zero for two and a half periods, New Hampshire’s Carolyn Gordon found the net for the game’s only goal as the Wildcats held on for a narrow 1-0 win Sunday.

Black Bear goaltender Lara Smart made 24 saves in the losing effort as UMaine dropped to 2-2 on the season with two losses to the Wildcats.

Saturday: New Hampshire opened UMaine’s America East schedule Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 victory in front of 257 fans.

The Wildcats opened the scoring at 14:30 of the first period on a goal from Kristen Thomas. The Black Bears tied the game just over two minutes later when senior Nicole Munro tallied her first goal of the season on assists from classmate Cindy Biron and first-year defender Vicky Johnstone.

New Hampshire didn’t let the score stay tied for long. Allison Edgar found the back of the net just 28 seconds after Munro’s goal and the Wildcats led the rest of the way.

UMaine will open its home schedule this weekend when Providence College visits Alfond Arena for a pair of games Saturday and Sunday.
