The University of Maine men’s basketball team solved its road woes Monday night, snapping a five-game winless streak with an 82-61 win at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
The Black Bears received a big boost from seniors Justin Rowe and Rickey White, who were playing in their second game of the year after serving five-game suspensions for NCAA rule violations.
White scored 17 points on 8-9 shooting from the field and Rowe added 15 points and eight blocked shots, just one shy of the UMaine record he already holds.
The Black Bears improved to 2-5 on the season, beating a Morgan State team that has yet to record a win in five games. First-year guard Kevin Reed led UMaine with 19 points and connected on four of nine shots from three-point range.
UMaine jumped out to a big first half lead thanks to 60 percent field shooting for the half. The Black Bears finished the game shooting 53 percent from the floor while holding Morgan State to just 33 percent.
After UMaine took a 45-28 lead into halftime, Morgan State played the Black Bears almost evenly in the second period. Morgan State held a 38-36 rebounding advantage, including an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass.
Steve Snipes paced Morgan State with 15 points and six rebounds. Randy Dukes also reached double digits in scoring with 12 points.
For UMaine, sophomore forward Joe Campbell scored 11 points and added seven rebounds. Senior forward Clayton Brown led the Black Bears with eight rebounds and chipped in with seven points.
UMaine continues its six-game road trip tomorrow night in Kingston, R.I. against the University of Rhode Island. Out of the Atlantic-10 Conference, the Rams have started the season 4-2. UMaine has not played in Rhode Island since 1991.
The Rams defeated fellow America East Conference member Northeastern University 95-82 Nov. 22 and are led by Dustin Hellenga, who averages 19 points per game.
The Black Bears return to Alfond Arena just days before Christmas for the Maine Holiday Tournament. UMaine hosts Husson College of Bangor Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. The Black Bears return the next day to take on Jacksonville State University.
