Police Beat

Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2:45 p.m., Aroostook Hall — A female student reported that she had sexual intercourse against her will in the basement of Aroostook Hall. The student and a male friend went to visit a friend in Aroostook. They left there later that night but ended up going to the basement instead of leaving the hall. It was there the student alleges that she was sexually assaulted. Public Safety cannot release any additional information because they are conducting a criminal investigation. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office, where it will be decided if charges will be pressed.

Saturday, Dec. 7, 1 a.m., Hart Hall — An officer was on a routine patrol on the third floor when he saw a number of beer cans, both opened and unopened, through an open door. He asked the age of the residents and found that all six people in the room were under 21. The two residents of the room, Sean Nichols, 18, and John Cannon, 19, were both summonsed for possession of alcohol by a minor. The other four were not UMaine students and the officer determined that they hadn’t been drinking. A total of five bottles of Miller Genuine Draft, a 12-pack of Bud Light, a 30-pack of Budweiser and a bottle of Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum were found in the room. Police suspect that someone else also was involved because there was an initialed backpack on the floor that didn’t belong to anyone in the room.

Saturday, Dec. 7, 10:30 p.m., Balentine Hall — Benjamin Burklow was arrested for criminal trespassing and transported to Penobscot County Jail. He had received a letter from Barbara Smith, the director of residence life and programs, which said he was not to enter Balentine Hall or he “would be treated as a trespasser and arrested,” which is what happened. Burklow is a member of the UMaine football team.

Sunday, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. — Public Safety received a call from the executive director of the AGENT Institute saying that a student volunteer worker had taken at least three 25-pound packages of hot dogs, valued at roughly $150. Students had asked earlier if they might take leftovers with them, but the director had said no because he planned to return the food or take it to a homeless shelter. Confirming the story with a custodian who had seen an individual loading up his vehicle with “bags and bags” of items, Public Safety identified the student. Officers arrived at the suspected student’s house on Park Street and were invited inside. Officers immediately saw one 25 pound package of hot dogs, but didn’t find the other two during a consented search of the house. They did, however, find two boxes of finger-style sandwiches, a case of muffins, eight cases of Capri-Sun Coolers, five cases of Coca Cola cans, two large bottles of French’s Mustard and Heinz Ketchup, 10 rolls of Bounty paper towels, one large can of Folger’s coffee, two cases of Mega Popcorn, six full boxes of extra large pizzas from Pizza Dome and one case of Frito-Lay chips. The total amounted to more than $400 of food. As a result, Balkaran Samaroo, 40, was charged with theft by unauthorized taking.
