The University of Maine men’s basketball team solved its road woes Monday night, snapping a five-game winless streak with an 82-61 win at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
The Black Bears received a big boost from seniors Justin Rowe and Rickey White, who were playing in their second game of the year after serving five-game suspensions for NCAA rule violations.
The University of Maine women’s basketball team will head to University of Rhode Island this weekend, after splitting games with the University of Akron and Kent State University last weekend.
The Black Bears returned to Orono Monday evening on a sour note, having dropped a close game with Kent State in overtime after surrendering a 14-point lead in the second half.
Two days after the University of Maine football team returned from Georgia with a second-round exit in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, the program received more bad news.

They’ve come a long way baby — from little red bricks to computers with infrared sensors. One of America’s favorite building toys made an appearance at the University of Maine Sunday. The third First Lego League Competition, sponsored by the University of Maine’s AGENT Institute, brought middle school-aged children from around the state together to compete in a robotics tournament showcasing their ingenuity and creativity.
The University of Maine’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity will be offering students a last chance to let loose and have fun before finals with a Mardi Gras bash at Ushuaia’s.
The event will be held Friday, Dec. 13, at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for people under 21, and $4 for those over 21.
The following events took place at the Dec. 10 meeting of the General Student Senate:
* The Woodsmen Team received $1,700 to allow the team to compete in a Woodsmen Competition Feb. 8 in Truro, Nova Scotia at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Funding will pay for the cost of chartering a bus.
Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2:45 p.m., Aroostook Hall — A female student reported that she had sexual intercourse against her will in the basement of Aroostook Hall. The student and a male friend went to visit a friend in Aroostook. They left there later that night but ended up going to the basement instead of leaving the hall.
Steven Milligan and Michael Grenier are fed up with the University Bookstore.
Since the fall of 2000, the roommates say they have felt ripped off by the Bookstore’s book buy-back system at the end of every semester. But this year, they have finally decided to do something about it.
Iraq and other Middle Eastern issues were the topics of the live video conference between University of Maine students and students at American University in Cairo Monday, Dec. 9 in the Soderberg Center of Jenness Hall.
Although the discussion became intense, students from both universities said the experience provided valuable insight into different perspectives.
December is a time of celebration, which causes normally sane individuals to succumb to “Hallmark fever.” The symptoms of this fever include hypersentimentality, an unexplained increase in love for fellow human beings and a tendency to speak only in the language of Hallmark cards.
