The following events took place at the Tuesday, Feb. 11 meeting of the General Student Senate:

* The Black Student Union received $1,800 for speaker fees. Speaker Dennis Wilson will give three presentations as a part of Black History Month. One presentation will be at the Black History Month dinner. Wilson’s presentations are on Feb. 20 and 21 and are open to all students.

* Residents on Campus received $600 to purchase a new computer.

* The Senate passed a resolution to adjust Student Government employee stipends to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). A total of $650 will be added to the Standing Board payroll, $3,000 to the Student Government payroll, and $72 to the Level III Club payroll. The adjustments will be implemented at the beginning of the pay period of Feb. 3-14. The change represents a cost of living adjustment that pays employees what they were originally intended to make, according to the statement of fact.

* Kyle Webster and Heather Kitchen were nominated for appointments to the Program Fund Board.

* The Italian Language Club was granted preliminary approval. The group was formed to provide academic support to students learning or interested in Italian language and culture.

* The Hip-Hop Dance Club was granted preliminary approval. The group choreographs their own dances and performs at various events.

* Student Government Vice President Gagnon is looking into a program that would provide free newspapers to students at the University of Maine. The newspapers, including USA Today, Bangor Daily News, and possibly The Boston Globe, would be available in Memorial Union and in most residence halls.

* Fair Election Practices Commissioner Erik Black reported that FEPC aims to set March 6 as the day the general student body can vote on the new Constitution.

* Off-Campus Board President Timothy Pike reported that the Town Relations subcommittee became a permanent committee, and the Off-Campus Council is looking for interested students to join.

* Student Women’s Association representative Breeana Blalock reported that “The Vagina Monologues” is taking place this week at 7:30 p.m. in Minsky Hall. The event costs $6 for students and $8 for non*students. Tickets are being sold for $1 to raffle off three vibrators. “The Vagina Monologues” is part of a nationwide campaign to end violence against women, particularly rape and sexual assault.
