Student Senate Notes

The following events took place at the Tuesday, Feb. 25 meeting of the General Student Senate:

* The Senate allocated $30,000 to Bumstock to bring one headlining act to Bumstock weekend. Money previously allocated to bring the musical group Jurassic 5 to Bumstock was returned to unallocated funds because plans fell through. A new resolution gave the money back to Bumstock, but without designating a specific group. Bumstock Director Courtlynn Hepler hopes to have the headliner finalized by the end of this week.

* The Maine Masque received $1,810 to cover one-fourth of the production costs of “True West.” Maine Masque will give eight performances April 3-6 and April 9-13.

* The Senate gave $560 to Campus Crusade for Christ to pay for 16 of the group’s members to attend the Nationwide Campus Crusade conference in Florida March 8-15. Funding will cover registration fees.

* The Senate gave the Interfraternity Council $500 to help sponsor Beta Theta Pi’s annual sleepout on Friday, Feb. 28. The purpose of the event is to raise funds and awareness for Rape Response Services of Bangor. President Peter S. Hoff is expected to speak at the sleepout.

* The Public Relations Committee received $400 to help sponsor the Statewide Leadership Conference this Saturday.

* The Student Art League and the Women’s Lacrosse Club both received $200 for their office budgets for fiscal year 2002-2003.

* The Student Heritage Alliance received $280 for a snow-tubing trip this Saturday. Funds will pay for half the price of tickets and some of the transportation costs.

* The female a capella group Renaissance received $200 for their office budget and $150 to help fund performances at Bates College and Houlton High School on March 1 and April 7. The money will cover gas and tolls. The group is planning an on-campus concert for the end of April.

* The Fair Election Practices Commission received $135 to pay for advertising for the upcoming Residents on Campus and Constitutional elections.

* The International Students Association received $130 to pay for travel expenses for a trip to Boston University for the Carnaval Presentation. The event is a cultural presentation focusing on South America. International Students Associations from Harvard, Boston College, Boston University, Tufts University and Northeastern University will also be present.

* The Senate passed a resolution to urge the administration to keep outside stairways free of snow and ice, particularly the stairways of Memorial Union and Fogler Library.

* University of Maine Bookstore director and guest speaker Bill Hockensmith addressed senators’ concerns about book prices and other issues related to the Bookstore.

* The Society of American Foresters and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers were reactivated at preliminary approval. Renaissance and the Society for Simpler Computing were reactivated at preliminary approval.

* The bylaws of the UMaine Tractor Club were granted preliminary approval.

* The Black Bear Mountain Bikers were granted a name change to the UMaine Cycling Club. The Black Bear Mountain Bikers wanted to merge with the UMaine Cycling Club.

The General Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in 100 Neville Hall.
