Ives Explores hunting tensions

Edward “Sandy” Ives, who retired from the University of Maine in 1999 after 44 years on the faculty, first in English and later in anthropology, will present at the Page Farm and Home Museum’s next brown bag lecture. The speech is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

The free lecture is titled “The Poacher Reconsidered or How I Found a Man Named George Magoon While I Was Busy Looking for Something Else: Serendipity Strikes Again,” based on Ives’ book “George Magoon and the Down-East Game Wars.” Magoon was a well-known poacher and Ives’ book explores the tension between local hunters and authorities attempting to impose and enforce game laws.

Attendees can either bring lunch with them or order one from the museum by Sept. 29 at a cost of $4.50. To order lunch or for information about the event, call 581-4100.
