Perhaps the harshest criticism of his presidency was levied on George W. Bush two weeks ago, as Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) called Operation Iraqi Freedom “a fraud that was made up in Texas.”
The Democrats hit a real home run with these comments, and picked the perfect mouthpiece.
*Force feeding religion
I was troubled by Galena Ojiem’s article in the Sept. 29 issue of The Maine Campus for a number of reasons. Firstly, she accuses the Gideons International of forcing their own world view on the rest of us by offering free copies of the New Testament publicly.
The construction of a resort casino in Sanford, Maine is the state’s solution to poverty and unemployment. Despite the state motto, Mainers are insisting that the state’s economic situation is not “the Way Life Should Be.” This casino would bring needed jobs back into the state and increase state revenue while lowering tax rates.
Forum lacks solution
Ah, the Student Forum on FirstClass – home to the malcontents, the misanthropes, the misguided, the occasionally misogynist, and generally ill-at-ease of UMaine. Could there be a more appropriate pedestal upon which to wax languidly on the injustices that surround us? Is it possible that a better venue for the free exchange of democratic ideals exists? Well, yes actually – it’s called your world, and every moment spent finger on key, locked in the library computer cluster, is one less moment that you, John or Jane UMaine, could be out changing it.
“My Soul”
Maria
Dreamworks Records
“My Soul,” the debut album from European R&B singer Maria, belongs at half-volume in a low-lit living room, whispering a background melody behind conversations about inattentive boyfriends and lust. It’s not spectacular, but it’s not vomit-inducing, either.
Squirrels are the new monkeys. Just as movies throw monkeys into the mix for comic relief, squirrels appear frequently in pop-culture, based on the premise that their very presence is funny. Before long, we’ll see squirrels in tuxedos starring alongside Jason Alexander as his career slides closer to doing small-town ribbon cutting ceremonies.
It’s a safe assumption to make that most college students are hard-pressed for cash. Many of these penny-scrounging 20-somethings also enjoy dining out. With that in mind, many local Orono and Old Town restaurants have deals once a week when two meals can be purchased for the price of one.
The University of Maine women’s rugby team fell to Colby on Saturday 12-0. Although the Black Bears came up short they allowed just seven first half points. In the second half they kept the pressure on offensively and were close to scoring several times. Colby added a try to give them five more points early in the second and then Maine stepped up its defense and kept the ball down the other end for the majority of the second half.
The University of Maine Field Hockey team finished their grueling road stretch with a win on Sunday over conference rival Maryland-Baltimore County. The win for Maine came after a loss on Saturday to highly ranked Ohio State 2-1 in overtime, which came just three days after the team defeated Dartmouth College 2-1 in double overtime.
Annie Hamel is a throwback to an era when athletes played their game with an overabundance of passion and pride. It is this unique throwback spirit that exists throughout the entire roster of the University of Maine women’s soccer team, and that is perhaps best represented in senior sensation Hamel.
