Field hockey wins again on the road

The team has three conference games remaining on the season

The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Colgate College on Sunday 4-2. The win for the Black Bears followed a 4-0 loss to 10th-ranked Northeastern. With the win at Colgate on Sunday in Hamilton, N.Y., the Black Bears improved to 12-4 and remained 2-1 in America East play.

The Black Bears tied their season high for goals scored in a game with four. Senior tri-captain Karyn Magno opened up the scoring with her seventh goal of the season at the 6:27 mark. She was assisted by Traci Rainone. Two seconds later, Magno assisted Rachael Hilgar for her team-leading ninth goal, which gave Maine a 2-0 lead. Colgate pulled within a goal when Dana Shaner scored for her team 24:10 into the game. Maine would take a 3-1 halftime lead when junior forward Traci Rainone scored unassisted with a minute to go in the first half. Senior Emily Dooling added a goal for Maine late at the 65:39 mark to give her team a 4-1 lead. She was assisted by Magno. Ashley Schneider scored from Natalie Heller for Colgate late in the game to make the final score 4-2.

Senior goalkeeper Jaye Lance split time with sophomore Jamie Morin in goal. Each had a goal scored against her. Lance made five saves while Morin recorded two. Colgate out-shot Maine 19-16 while Maine held the advantage in penalty corners 9-6.

While Maine improved to 12-4, Colgate continues to struggle. They are 5-8 overall and have a 2-3 conference record. They play in the Patriot League Conference.

While conference foes, Northeastern, Boston University and New Hampshire are receiving national attention, Maine remains out of the top-20, but will need to finish strong to be recognized nationally. Senior Jana Ouellette believes they can have a strong finish.

“We have to play our A-game the rest of the season,” she said.

Senior Karly Bundy knows how hard it is for Maine to reach the top-20.

“I think that, us being Maine, sometimes we are underrated,” said Bundy. “And other teams get wins against certain teams that pushes them into the top-20. We have to beat these teams over and over to get into the top-20.”

While pleased with Lance’s play, Head Coach Terry Kix is more pleased with her overall team effort.

“I think our bread and butter of our team this year has been a really solid effort in team defense,” said Kix.

With tough games down the final stretch of the regular season, the Black Bears are looking for a high seeding in their conference tournament. They have three remaining games on the regular season slate, all three of which are conference games. On Friday they will play in Durham, N.H. to take on the Wild Cats. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. They return home on Sunday, Oct. 26 to play Vermont at noon on Morse Field in Orono, and the following Saturday they will match up against Albany at home at 11 a.m.
