Dear Santa

Elections held this week for student body president and vice president showed a remarkable split in students’ opinions of who should represent them. In the end, Cortlynn Hepler and Justin Brown won out, and will now step up as the student body’s new representatives and leaders. This new administration shows great promise, as both Hepler and Brown appear fresh and willing to work. This being the holiday season, we thought it proper to offer a wish list of sorts to these two men, who will soon have the power to make decisions that affect all of us.

*Because the primary power of the senate comes through distribution of funds, we ask that those funds be used to benefit the entire student body. Office furniture, plaques and other expenditures benefit no one outside of GSS.

*Rather than create more positions, work on making those already in existence more efficient.

*Realize that Student Government must view itself as equal to the student body in order to properly represent it.

*Don’t take yourself too seriously. You are still students and it is OK for you to have fun.

*Serve the student body, not your own agenda. Your positions are about leadership, not resumE building.

*Remember your campaign promises. You earned students’ votes based on the initiatives you promoted in the weeks prior to the election

*Don’t stretch your reach too thin. Focus on specific issues and affect change there.

*Make yourself present and available to the student body.

*Remember that you serve the students, not the administration, of the University of Maine. Find a balance between these often competing interests.

With a student senate that has recently become somewhat removed from the students it serves, we hope the opening months of next semester will set a tone for change and bring GSS in a positive direction.
