The University of Maine’s weekend sweep of the University of New Hampshire extended beyond the Alfond Arena ice this weekend, and continued in the UMaine Field House, as the women’s track team rolled over UNH and Central Connecticut State, and the men’s track team notched a dual meet victory over CCSU.

Maine’s effort in the women’s meet resulted in 146 points to UNH’s 120 and CCSU’s 77. The Black Bears were lead by dominating performances from Claire Poliquin with a record setting high jump and Kristen Vidlak’s commanding performance in the mile run. Other winners included Kathryn Souviney, 60-yard hurdles, Amanda Virgets, 500-meter, Heather Jovanelli, 800-meter, Hana Pelletier, 1,000-meter, and the 4×880 relay team. In the field events, Rachel McCaslin captured the long jump while Stephanie McCusker nabbed the triple jump, Staci Short won the weight throw, and Katie Page took the shot put.

Earlier this week, Page spoke about the team’s need to stay focused during this meet and their upcoming meet against Holy Cross:

“For these next two weekends at home it will be very important for our team to remain focused,” Page said. “The America East Championships are less than one month away and we need to continue building momentum for that even though we may not see terribly demanding competition in CCSU and Holy Cross.”

The story of the men’s meet was the contribution the Black Bears received from a quartet of freshman event winners, led by Chris Warren who won the high jump as well as the 60 yard hurdles. Other freshman winners were Eric Libby in the 400 meter run, Sean Steinhagen in the 800 meter and Donnie Drake in the 1,000 meter.

“We have tons of chill freshmen that win events, like Chris Warren, Eric Libby, Sean Steinhagen, and Donnie Drake,” said junior Adam Goode.

Overall, the UMaine men won all but two events to outpace CCSU 112-48. David Cusano, Nolan Tobey and Scott O’Connor all led the field in running events, meanwhile Black Bear relay teams won the 4×440 and 4×880-yard relays. Throwers Andre Dubois and Anthony Morgan each notched victories, as did Scott Godsoe in two field events.

Andy Caron, Jeff Caron, Mike Lansing and Tony Morgan, all members of the men’s track team, missed the meet Saturday. The group traveled to Northeastern University to compete in the Collegiate Division of the Adidas Boston Indoor Games. Despite sending only four competitors, UMaine managed to place ninth in the competition of 16 teams. Leading the way was Andy Caron who captured the mile run in a time of 4:15.86, just ahead of second place finisher Mike Lansing. Jeff Caron finished third in the 5,000 meter run, and Tony Morgan came in fifth in the weight throw.

Next weekend, both UMaine teams remain at home as Holy Cross travels to Orono to take on the Black Bears Saturday at noon.
