The University of Maine women’s soccer team recorded another shutout win on Friday against Rider.
The Black Bears outplayed a talented Rider team en route to an impressive 2-0 victory. Rider came into Friday’s match with a record of 4-1-1. The Bears came into Friday’s game with an impressive 5-2-1 record. The Black Bears showed that they can play on the road yet again in a victory that, although in Maine, was a road game. Falmouth is not Orono.
The Black Bears had goals from their two top scorers, Heather Hathorn and Marie-Andree Canuel. Hathorn’s goal came at 19:57 in the first half on a direct free kick. The Bears notched another goal quickly after Canuel finished off a corner from Freshman Jordan Pekrul at 22:33 in the first half. After Canuel’s tally Maine was able to lock up the match and allow Tanya Adorno to collect her fourth shutout in seven games. The shutout was another impressive accolade for Adorno, who is putting together a stellar season and career at the University of Maine. Adorno has 14 career shutouts for the Black Bears. In the match, Adorno faced nine shots while registering three saves. The Bears trend of out shooting their opponents continues once again with the Black Bears outshooting the the Bronco’s 15-9. Riders goaltender Kim Carter faced five shots on net. She collected three saves during the loss.
“We play every team the same,” Hathorn said early this week.
They do play every team the same by outshooting and out working nearly every team they have faced. The Black Bears have been led into battle by Maine’s top scorers Canuel and Hathorn, both of who came into the weekend ranked first and second on the team in scoring. Canuel is leading the conference with eight goals, while Hathorn is ranked fourth in the America East standings with five goals. Canuel is also leading the conference in points with 17 points and second in shots per game with a 3.50 average. Tanya Adorno ranks first in goals against average with .63, she is third in save percentage with a .846, 9th in saves per game with a six save per game average, and tied for first with a .50 shutouts per game average.
As a team, Maine ranks as one of the best in the conference in several statistical categories. They are among the best in goals per game, points per game, shots per game, G.A.A. and shutouts, as a testament to their defensethey have faced the least amount of shots per game among their America East counterparts.
Maine hasn’t played their conference opponents yet, but having two of the top scorers, the top goaltender, and the top team on paper in the northeast has helped propel them to one of the most fearsome squads in the league.
The Black Bears start their assault on America East this weekend against University of Maryland Baltimore County Friday and against SUNY Binghamton Sunday afternoon. For Maine the conference schedule marks their first set of home games since August 28th.
