A man was charged following an incident with a knife in York Hall at 1 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. Officers responded to the hall following a person-wanted-out complaint. It was believed that the individual the complaint referred to was in a third floor room and was in possession of an illegal knife. Officers knocked on the door of the room and a male resident answered. In the back corner of the room a man identified as Sean Hladick, 18, of Orono, was seen with a butterfly knife. As a result, Hladick received a summons for trafficking dangerous knives.
High school theft follows man to college
A man was charged following an investigation that began in Freeport in March and ended on Friday, Oct. 22 in Orono. Public Safety received information suggesting that a Knox Hall resident may be in possession of stolen property. The item in question was a Mitsubishi Computer Projector valued at $2995 that had been reported missing from Freeport High School on March 23, 2004. An officer responded to the resident’s room and saw the stolen item on the floor. The item was recovered and the resident, identified as Christopher Murray, 18, of Orono was charged with receiving stolen property. Murray is a 2004 graduate of Freeport High School.
Pizza box bon fire leads to summons for two men
Two men were charged with reckless conduct after starting a fire outside of Penobscot Hall at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. An officer on patrol in Penobscot noticed three men on the third floor staring out a window. When the men noticed the officer, they quickly moved away. The officer stopped the men and asked them what they had been looking at. One of the men stated there was a fire outside. The officer then noticed a small fire approximately 20 feet from the dorm. He identified the three men and then went outside to extinguish the fire. The fire consisted of several pizza boxes stacked on top of each other and reached a height of approximately three feet, according to police reports. After the fire was extinguished, the officer went back inside to speak with the three men. It was determined that two of the men were responsible for starting the fire. As a result, Jerry Whalen, 18, and Jeffrey Poirier, 18, both of Orono were issued summonses for reckless conduct.
Woman charged with assault of roomate
A woman was charged with assault following an altercation with her roommate at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. Officers responded to a report that a woman had been assaulted. According to police reports, two women had gotten into a discussion about placement of property in the room. One of the roommates, identified as Jacquelyn Michaud, 20, of Orono apparently lunged towards her roommate and struck her three or four times with her hands and pulled her hair. Witnesses outside the room heard the victim yelling at the roommate to leave her alone. As a result, Michaud was charged with assault.
Man gets summons for possesion on campus
A man was issued a summons following a situation involving drugs by Lengyl Field at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. An officer noticed a person walking on a path near the field. Due to the time of night, the officer thought this was suspicious and decided to follow the person. The officer could hear several males talking and illuminated them with a flashlight. One of the men immediately dropped a joint. One of the men, Corey Burns, 18, of Orono stated that the marijuana was his. As a result, Burns received a summons for illegal possession of marijuana.
Long stay in bathroom tips RD to drunkeness
A man was issued a summons following a situation in the lobby of York Hall at about 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Officers had reported to the hall in regards to a disorderly conduct report. While dealing with that, one officer was approached by the resident director who informed him of a man who had been in the lobby bathroom for an extended period of time. The man, identified as Brian O’Connell, 19, or Orono then emerged from the bathroom. He appeared physically intoxicated, was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol. He was asked if he had any alcohol on him. He produced four beer cans from his backpack. As a result, O’Connell was issued a summons for possession of alcohol by a minor.
Two summonsed at Kennebec Hall
Two people were issued summonses and one person was referred to Judicial Affairs following a situation in front of Kennebec Hall at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. An officer noticed a man, identified as Jameson Phinney, 18, of Orono, standing by the corner of the building. When approached, Phinney appeared to be hiding a corn cob pipe. Based on the fact that he was trying to hide the item, the officer assumed that it contained an illegal substance. The officer asked Phinney for the pipe, to which he responded, “What pipe?” The officer obtained the pipe, which contained unsmoked marijuana. There were two females with Phinney, whom the officer decided to separate in order to question in regards to the situation. One of the women had a backpack that she had left behind. An officer reached down to pick it up for her and felt several cans inside the pack. The officer asked the woman how much beer was in the backpack. She stated that there were two cans. A search of the pack produced a plastic baggy containing marijunana, in addition to the beer. The second woman, identified as Danielle Howe, 20, of Houlton, stated that the marijuana was hers. As a result, both Howe and Phinney received summonsed for possession of a usable amount of marijuana. Phinney also received a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia. The owner of the backpack was identified as being under 21. As a result, she was referred to Judicial Affairs for possession of alcohol by a minor.
