To say Danielle Tangredi picked a good time to score her first career goal could be considered an understatement.
With more than three minutes left in overtime, the freshman beat Wayne State goalie Tina Thibideau to give the University of Maine women’s hockey team a 4-3 victory on Sunday at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears swept the Warriors in a two-game series.
“Basically we crashed the net and tried to get everything we could towards the net,” Tangredi said. “The chance to sweep to someone at home was amazing and once we hit overtime we knew this was going to be our game.”
The goal was setup when the Black Bears were able to work the puck around for a shot on Thibideau only to have her rebound go to Tangredi along with Saturday’s 2-1 victory, UMaine’s record improved to 3-1-1.
Going into the second period, the Black Bears were trailing 2-1 until they created two pivotal goals. Umaine outshot Wayne State 18-6 in the period. UMaine’s first goal came 15 minutes into the period when defensemen Karine Senecal found Cheryl White who fed a centering pass to Andrea Steranko to deadlock the game at 2-2. Three minutes later, UMaine took the lead when forward Laura Maddin snatched a Brigitte LaFlamme rebound off Thibideau.
“I think when we play down low, that is where we dominate,” said Steranko, who accounted for two points over the weekend. “I saw a lot of effort from everyone this weekend and everyone worked hard to get to our goal, which was a sweep.”
In the third period, the Warriors were able to tie the game off a power play goal when Peyton Patterson found Wayne State captain Kelly Zamora who beat Maine goalie Rachel Gettings. The goal tied up the match at 3-3 with around 10 minutes left in the game.
UMaine’s opening victory against the Warriors was ignited by the senior duo of Steranko and Cheryl White.
The Black Bears’ first goal came in the opening period when Steranko was able to find White who backhanded her shot past Warriors’ netminder Valery Turcotte for the 1-0 lead. UMaine was able to increase their lead to 2-0 when leading scorer Sonia Corriveau played a centering pass to Kate Sundstrom as she beat Turcotte for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Wayne State’s lone goal came in the second period when the Warriors won a face-off deep in the UMaine zone. Jessica Haydahl was able to slide the puck past Gettings to cut the lead to 2-1. Outside of the Haydahl goal, Gettings stopped the 17 shots she faced, one of them being a point-blank shot with less than three minutes to go.
“I thought our team played great, we had offense and defense and were able to score the goals when we needed to,” Gettings said. “This was a big win and a big weekend for us and, are going to carry this momentum into next weekend.”
