This past weekend, the University of Maine men’s and women’s swim teams competed in the Harold Anderson Invitational held at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. The invitational, in which the Black Bears have not competed for the past few years, saw UMaine take advantage of a championship atmosphere and many swimmers came away with first-place finishes.
For the women’s team, Megan Wolters and Tal Shpaizer came home from the meet with three first-place finishes. Wolters placed first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:57.02, the 200-meter back in 2:07.46, nearly five seconds ahead of the nearest competitor and the 500-meter freestyle in 5:11.25. Shpaizer took first place in the 200 meter individual medley with a time of 2:10.98, the 100-meter back in 1:00.23, and the 100-meter butterfly in 59.58.
Brittany Harrington took first place in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 11:00.30. Harrington was followed by teammates Sarah Holmsten, who placed third with a time of 11:04.24. Harrington also placed second in the 400-meter IM in 4:45.69, while Kiki O’Donnell placed third and Holmsten placed fifth. Karin Feldman took third place in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:19.17. Katrine Alcaide took second place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25.49, and Kelsey Wilson took third place in the 200-free in 2:00.65.
In the relay events, UMaine placed second and fifth in the 400-relay and second and fourth in the 200-freestyle relay. In the 200-meter medley relay, UMaine placed first and third, and also placed first and third in the 400-freestyle relay.
For the women’s diving team, Shannon Scott placed second in the one-meter dive event, and first place in the three-meter dive. Jessica Pratt took third place in both the one and three-meter dives.
For the men’s swim team, Andy Magiera won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:06.24 and placed second in the 100-meter butterfly. Scott Forrestall finished sixth in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 10:57.36, while Barrett Nichols and Sean Hess followed in eighth and ninth place. Michael Goede finished second in the 100-backstroke in 58.21. In the 200-meter IM, Martin Fitch took sixth place with a time of 2:05.25, Fitch also finished third in the 400-meter IM in 4:23.38 and third in the 200 meter backstroke. Zach Weinman finished eighth in the 200-meter IM and was third in the 200-meter breaststroke at 2:22.13. Jason Stevens and Zach Gray finished in fourth and sixth in the 200-freestyle.
In the relay events, the Black Bears finished fourth in the 400-meter medley relay, second in the 200-meter medley relay, fourth in the 400-meter free relay and third in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
In the men’s diving events, Keith Burgie placed second in the three-meter dive, and was followed by Justin Alley and Issac Forbes who finished third and fourth. In the one meter event, Burgie took first place for the Black Bears, while Alley finished third.
UMaine will return back to dual meets Dec. 11, when the teams will face Boston University in Orono.
