
The University of Maine men’s and women’s track teams have been maxed out competing in their first five meets all over New England without enjoying one home event. On Saturday, the 48-day drought came to an end when the Black Bears hosted Central Connecticut State University and the University of New Hampshire. The men enjoyed their homecoming with a commanding 107-65 win over CCSU. The women fell one point shy, placing second to UNH, 132-131, but handling CCSU, who placed third with 86 points.
The men did not let anyone down. The Black Bears dominated in almost every event en route to their first win of the season. UMaine swept the field events, led by junior Troy Irvine with wins in the pole vault and long jump. Irvine cleared 4.57 meters in the pole vault, setting a meet record. Chris Warren was first in the high jump and Jesse Ludwig grabbed the win in the triple jump. In the weight throw, Anthony Morgan set a meet record at 16.43 meters and Michael Leconte won the shot put with a throw of 14.88 meters.
On the track, Sydney Harrison won the 60-yard dash with a time of 6.63 seconds, while Scott O’Connor and Paul Rupprecht racked up points in the 800-meters finishing second and third, respectively. In the mile, Michael Lansing took first place in 4:28.54 and David Woods placed second at 4:49.06. Donald Drake finished first in the 1000 meters, running a 2:29.39, followed by Lansing at 2:32.46. Sophomore Kirby Davis continued UMaine’s strong showing by leading a top three sweep of the 3,000 meters picking up the win, running 8:51.66. Junior Josh Trevino and senior Adam Goode finished second and third, respectively. In the 60-yard hurdles, Nathan Holmes ran away with first with time of 7.98. The Black Bears also won the 4-by-800 relay and were second in the 4-by-400 relay.
In the women’s meet, senior Silvia Scaldaferri had another great meet, leading the women with wins in two events. Scaldaferri took first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.19 and added a win in the long jump, going 5.44 meters. Sophomore Hana Pelletier set a meet and Fieldhouse record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:55.28, while freshman Lindsay Burlock finished first in the 500 meters with a time of 1:19.08. Junior Kathryn Souviney was first in the 60-yard hurdles with a time of 8.37. Black Bears won the 4-by-400 relay, but finished third in the 4-by-800 relay. Maine was strong in the field events with sophomore Erin Hatch winning the high jump at 1.60 meters and junior Stephanie McCusker taking first in the triple jump with 11.66 meters. The Bears also had a 1-2-3 sweep in the shot put. Freshman Micralyn Wiechman was first with a throw of 11.70 meters, junior Mary McDonough took second at 11.60 meters and freshman Maegan Burke finished third throwing 11.57 meters.
The Black Bears continue their home-stand hosting Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 5.
