Fair trade was the topic of a lecture titled, “The Negative Impacts of Free Trade Agreements Here and Abroad.” The lecture was held as part of the University of Maine’s Human Rights Awareness Week by Peace Through Interamerican Community Action (PICA) last Wednesday night in the Bangor Room of the Memorial Union.

The possibility of extraterrestrial life was discussed in a lecture last Thursday. The hall in Neville was packed with students from various astronomy classes as well as some curious community members. Wendy Hagen Bauer, Ph.D of Wellesley College spoke at the event sponsored by the Shapley Visiting Lectureships Program of the American Astronomical Society and by the UMaine Department of Physics and Astronomy.

GOP may amend constitution

Orrin Hatch wants to change the Constitution. In 2003 Hatch proposed altering the clause in the constitution that makes it impossible for foreign-born U.S. citizens to run for president, and the debate went nowhere. This isn’t so strange really. Every so often Congress debates the idea of amending what seems an increasingly archaic law.

My mailbox has been flooded with e-mails commenting on my article “DVD collections offer insight into personality” [The Maine Campus, Jan. 17]. Some are supportive, patting me on the back and re-affirming my stance. Other responses range from cynical to downright negative, claiming that I perpetuate stereotyping and that I’m an idiot.

The University of Maine men’s and women’s track teams have been maxed out competing in their first five meets all over New England without enjoying one home event. On Saturday, the 48-day drought came to an end when the Black Bears hosted Central Connecticut State University and the University of New Hampshire.

Take a deep breath University of Maine drivers. UMaine Public Safety has received an Intoxilyzer from the State of Maine, a machine that determines blood-alcohol level by testing breath.

Until recently, Public Safety officials would transport students suspected drunk driving or violating the under 21 zero tolerance policy to the Orono Police Department to run this test.

As part of a campus-wide initiative to keep the University of Maine on the cutting-edge, Dining Services will petition the Board of Trustees in March for a $20 million revenue bond to update its facilities. Major renovations are planned for Hilltop and Wells Commons, as well as an overhaul of the menus and meal plans.
