After overcoming injuries and illnesses, the University of Maine women’s hockey team has one more challenge to face: Providence College.
The Black Bears could close in on their goal of making it to the Hockey East playoffs with this weekend’s two-game set, where four Hockey East points are up for grabs. If the Black Bears win both games against Providence, the team could move back into third place. UMaine, idle last weekend, are currently in fourth place.
“I think we needed a break and we had a big stretch before last week and we are about to have another … we took three days off and it’s important to refocus,” said coach Guy Perron. “We have just wanted to tuneup some of the things in the past and get healthy and hit the road on Friday and see what happens over the weekend.”
Outside of a road series with Boston College later this month, their series against Providence will be the final road trip for Black Bears. UMaine will enjoy a four-game homestand against conference leaders New Hampshire and Northeastern after their series with the Friars. Earlier in the season, the Black Bears were able to sweep the Huskies, while notching a tie and a lost against UNH.
As for the Friars, they were able to split their series with UNH, putting them one point out of first place. Earlier in the season, when the Friars took on the Black Bears, they were able to sweep the series. Since that weekend, the Black Bears have gone on a seven-game winning streak and have managed to go 9-3-1. UMaine emerged from the bottom of the conference standings all the way to third place.
“We have played both those teams so we know what to expect and we are ready for them,” said forward and leading goal scorer Cheryl White. “We are a lot more ready now than we were the first time we played Providence and I think it will be a different story for us this time around.”
