UMaine earns series split on the road in New Jersey

On Saturday, the University of Maine baseball team continued their traveling tour of the east coast with a split against Monmouth. The Black Bears closed out the afternoon doubleheader with a 2-0 shutout victory after opening the day with a 8-7 defeat. The squad’s Sunday game against Monmouth was called in the top of the fifth inning due to constant rain that had persisted since its start.

With the split, the Black Bears improved to 7-7 on the year, while the Hawks slide to 4-8.

Anchored by Steve Richard, the Black Bears used steady pitching to garner the decision. Scattering three hits over seven innings, they struck out nine. Richard improved to 2-0 on the season. For the talented sophomore, the shut-out was the third of his career.

The Black Bears found the scoreboard first, with a run in the top of the second inning. The inning began with a Matt McGraw single. The skilled freshmen then proceeded to advance to third off a throwing error. Frank Pasanello drove McGraw in with a single.

In the sixth inning, UMaine tacked on an insurance run to finish off Monmouth. The score saw Joe Hough single and then advance to second when Aaron Izaryk hit into a field’s choice. On the following at-bat, Joel Barrett smashed a double to left to bring in Hough. The RBI capped of the game for UMaine.

Game one of the double-header played out with drastically different results, both teams combated each other run for run throughout the match. The Black Bears burst out to an early advantage when McGraw brought in Izaryk with an RBI single. The Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, only to be countered by UMaine in the third inning. Barrett crossed the plate after McGraw reached on a error.

Monmouth jumped back to a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

After pulling the game even in the sixth, UMaine snatched a two run lead in the seventh when Ryan Quintal singled in Barrett. Curt Smith then brought home Quintal with a single.

The Hawks answered back with two in the eighth to win the game.

Quintal finished the game 4-for-4, while scoring two runs. Quintal also drove in three runs.

On the mound for UMaine, Greg Norton went three innings while allowing four runs on five hits. Troy Martin also saw time throwing from the rubber in 4 1/3 innings. Martin allowed four runs on five hits. Martin fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss.

The Black Bears return to action this Saturday when they travel to New York Tech on Saturday, March 26.
