Historians Against the War will sponsor a teach-in about the war in Iraq on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. in 101 Neville Hall. The purpose of the teach-in, titled “The Iraq War and the Elections,” is to provide people with the history of Iraq, and educate people about the current conflict and United States involvement in the Middle East and Iraq in particular. “The goal is to provide information and analysis,” Alexander Grab, professor of history said.
The two-hour lecture will be divided between a panel of seven speakers and a question and answer period will follw. Five of the speakers are professors: Nathan Godfried, Alex Grab, Michael Lang, Beth McKillen and Ngo-Vinh Long. They will briefly cover topics such as the history of Iraq, U.S. policy and use of language by government officials, opposition and protest of conflicts, and a comparison of the Iraq war with Vietnam.
The other two panelists are Brian Clement and Scott Ruffner. Clement, an Iraq war veteran and student here at the University of Maine, will speak about his time in Iraq. Ruffner, a political activist from Bangor, will provide information about the war in Iraq and elections.
The goals of the teach-in are to expose people to information not readily found in the media, and to provide information and analysis about what has been happening in Iraq.
Historians Against the War is a national organization that sponsors teach-ins of this type across the country.
