University struggles to increase retention

The University of Maine’s graduation and retention rates could use “a hair of improvement,” according to the University of Maine’s provost. Brainstorming approaches to this issue was the purpose of discussion in the first “town meeting” for the university community, held on Tuesday afternoon in the Totman Lounge.

ASB members pitch tents, pitch in

Employee charity raises more than $111,000 for United Way

The Combined Charitable Appeal for University Employees has exceeded its campaign total for this year. Originally pegged at $110,000, CCAUE surpassed this mark for a grand total of $111,844.74. The CCAUE has raised a sizeable sum for the United Way, which manages the program.

Madison Scholarships fuel fierce competition among history students

The 20th anniversary of the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation has college seniors and graduate students across the country filling out applications for a scholarship worth up to $24,000. “The program was founded to try and encourage more people to get into teaching American history and the constitution to secondary education students,” said University of Maine Political Science professor Mark Brewer.

ROC holds residence hall donation contest

Around this time of year, Toys for Tots donation drop-off sites are everywhere. Since Dec. 4, the University Maine Residents on Campus has been running a toy drive that could more suitably be called Toys for Teens. While on an internship with Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services, ROC secretary Jen Turcotte noticed that a lot of the toys that came in from toy drives were for younger children and that teenagers were being forgotten.
