The month of December is a busy one. Studying for finals competes with end-of-the-semester parties and holiday celebrations. Hillel, the on-campus Jewish organization at the University of Maine, is offering a celebration of its own.
Hillel’s Hanukkah party begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Coe Room of Memorial Union. Members of Hillel will provide traditional, homemade potato latkes and other foods. The center holds celebrations, worship organizations or social activities, organized around Jewish life.
Joel Simons, vice president of Hillel, said that while the organization already had its last meeting, “next semester we will be meeting either in the chapel or Skulls room and anyone is welcome to come.”
Hillel is an organization run by students and is designed to serve Jewish faculty, staff, students and others interested in Jewish culture and traditions. The center focuses on unification and advocates a sense of community among its members.
Another of the many purposes of Hillel is working to link UMaine with surrounding Jewish communities in Orono and the Greater Bangor Area. Brian Milakovsky, the president of Hillel, said that even if a student is not Jewish, they are still welcome to attend the party and any other events offered by the center.
“Non-members are welcome and you definitely do not have to be Jewish,” Milakovsky said. He said that for those interested in learning more about Jewish culture and tradition, Hillel has meetings on Mondays at 5:15 p.m.
“We also have a Friday night worship in the Chapel once a month, and that is open to anyone.” Milakovsky added that parties such as the upcoming one are “a great time to hang out and relax with friends before finals begin.” For more information on the Hillel celebration, or to join or attend Hillel events, contact Joel Simons on FirstClass.
