Police action at Bear Brew scrutinized

Rumors abound over an incident at the Bear Brew Pub Friday night, where police allegedly drew their guns in the bar, causing a panic. The pub was hosting a hip-hop show at the time.

“My employees and my customers were hitting the deck,” said Matt Haskell, the bar’s owner. “I personally believe that other people were put in danger because of the way [police] acted.”

Haskell said that even though police brought a man outside, the police realized he wasn’t the man they were looking for and released him. “I was there for the whole thing. I stood there and watched it,” Haskell said.

Eyewitnesses reported the involvement of Bangor and Orono police. However, both departments have declined to comment on the incident until Monday.

Daniel Worthley, a bouncer at the club who was working there Friday night, said he and other Bear Brew staff were in the dark as to why police were in the establishment.

“We were all inside and not allowed to go outside while the cops were there,” Worthley said. “None of us really know what it was all about.”

The Student Forum on FirstClass has been host to rumors about the Friday night incident, including one that a performer scheduled to rap that night was wanted for armed robbery and arrested. Haskell denied the claim.

“To my knowledge, no one was arrested,” Haskell said. He added that the man police thought would be performing was not present, nor had Haskell booked the subject in question. “I think there was a mistake made on the part of the police.”

Haskell said he wouldn’t comment further until he spoke with his lawyer.

Bangor-based rapper and former UMaine football player Garland Webb performed at Soma 36, the Bear Brew Pub’s in-house dance club, Friday evening. Webb, 22, raps under the name Affiliate, and was joined that night by Massachusetts rappers Termanology and Dre Robinson.
