UMaine women sweep Catamounts

The University of Maine women’s hockey team put an end to a five-game losing skid with a pair of wins against the Vermont Catamounts this weekend.

It was the Black Bears’ first weekend sweep of 2007, and just their third win of the calendar year with all three coming at the expense of the Cats.

Yesterday’s series finale was a thriller that saw UMaine score four unanswered goals to win 4-2 after falling behind early.

The Black Bears scored twice in the final two minutes, getting the game winner from Taryn Peacock with 2:00 remaining on the clock and an insurance goal from Sonia Corriveau with 41 seconds left in the game.

The goals capped a comeback that started with Vanessa Vani’s power play goal midway through the first. Trailing 2-1 afer two periods, UMaine’s Kelly Law tied the game 2:22 into the third on the man-advantage before Peacock’s heroics.

Sophomore goalie Genevieve Turgeon settled down after spotting Vermont a 2-0 lead and finished the afternoon with 19 saves and was awarded the game’s first star.

Saturday, UMaine won 3-1 on the strength of two power play goals from Kate Sunstrum. She opened the scoring 7:36 into the first period on the man advantage. Robyn Law’s ninth of the year midway through the second period made it 2-0 UMaine, and Sunstrum added her second of the night just 52 seconds into the third.

Vermont finally beat Turgeon 16:24 into the third period, scoring their only goal, courtesy of Jackie Rhode. Turgeon made 19 saves in the winning effort.

The Black Bears return home next weekend for their final Alfond Arena series of 2006-07, hosting Boston University on Saturday and Sunday. Both games begin at noon.
