In its final event of the semester, the University of Maine New Writing Series welcomed New York poets Allison Cobb and Brenda Coultas to the Soderberg Auditorium last Thursday. The poets presented equally impressive performances, which, conveniently enough, complemented each other rather nicely, due in part to their similar interests in history and the mysterious.
Maine Day paintball with a purpose
Though volunteerism is strong at the University of Maine, it is no secret that many students consider Maine Day to be just another day off. While there’s a morning parade to inspire – or annoy – students into community service, not everyone considers this a day for volunteerism.
The University of Maine baseball squad dropped three of four games at Albany, N.Y., over the weekend, lowering their already-floundering record to 14-24 overall and 5-7 in America East.
UMaine’s win in the series came late Saturday on the heels of a 5-4 loss that proved difficult to swallow.
Strolling down the street in the cool spring air, all was calm. From the window of one apartment, however, a rhythmic melody flowed, breaking the serenity of the night.
The faint pounding of drums and deep pulsing of a bass guitar could be heard more clearly outside the door of the apartment.

“I’ve only been doing this for 10 days, and I could already have stolen eight laptops.”
These are the words of Taryn Buckley, fourth-year communication science disorder major at the University of Maine and the driving force behind UMaine’s “Stamp Out Book Theft” program.
Hi there. My name’s Derek. I’m from Massachusetts and I’m a third-year political science major with a legal studies concentration. I love music – my favorite bands are Death Cab for Cutie and the Beatles [yeah, I know, cliche, but it's true]. I play guitar, bass, a little bit of piano and sing.
I grew up with a fairly rough older brother; that is a pleasant euphemism for saying he was a slightly abusive person in our younger years, both verbally and physically, but I don’t begrudge him anything. All those Indian sunburns eventually gave way to calluses that still linger today and I am a stronger person for it.
Give new rec center a chance
The new recreation center, despite a mandatory $98 cost per semester, isn’t just a gymnasium. The $25 million building will feature wireless Internet, a cafe, three multi-purpose rooms and a leisure pool alongside the usual basketball, volleyball and racquet ball courts, locker rooms and exercise areas.
Last year, Kevin McMahan became the first University of Maine football player selected in the NFL draft since 1990 when the Oakland Raiders selected him with their final pick. Fast forward nearly 365 days and several members of the Black Bears’ 2006 senior class are hoping to follow in the dynamic receiver’s footsteps.
