The University of Maine men’s soccer team dropped to 1-6 after a hard-fought battle on Friday in Yarmouth, Maine. They dropped their fifth straight, losing 1-0 against Sacred Heart University.
Both teams brought a shut out into the second half when Jason Tessitore of Sacred Heart beat UMaine’s keeper Nemanja Kostic at 68:36. It was Tessitore’s first goal of the season and it was all that Sacred Heart needed to fend off the Black Bears. The Black Bears led in shots on goal 9-6, but could not capitalize and score. Maine has settled down and now has fewer fouls than their opponents in the seven games that they have played, but they are still falling short each game.
UMaine keeper Kostic is doing his part to keep his team in each game that they play, but the offense has not been able to back up their goalie. As of Friday night, the Black Bears have been outscored 17-2 and one of those goals was in overtime. The Black Bears have also been out shot by their opponents, 107-56. Home field advantage also seems to be a factor that has played into the Black Bears’ struggles, as they have lost all four away games. The only game they have won occurred on home turf.
The Black Bears will play their first home game since their win on Aug. 31 against UMass Sunday, Sept. 23, and hopefully home field advantage will help them win like it did when they played out the only win of their season.
