The University of Maine men’s soccer team dropped a pair of home games this week as their record fell to 3-12-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in conference play.
On Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field, Maine faced their first opponent, the Vermont Catamounts. There was no scoring in the first half, but in the second half, Vermont was the first to strike. The Catamounts’ Justin Geibel found teammate Lee Stephen Kouadio, who made a swift move past Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic and scored on an open net at 62:34. Vermont later added to its lead at 82:33. Loren Hill scored on a pass from Tyler Hasman. Vermont went on to win the game 2-0, handing Maine its first home loss of the season. Vermont had a slight 11-9 advantage in shots. Kostic made four saves on the day while Catamounts’ keeper Roger Scully saved three shots.
This past Saturday afternoon, Maine played its last regular season home game against Stony Brook on a rain-soaked Alumni Field. In the first half, Stony Brook got on the scoreboard when a Maine defender deflected a header into his own goal. Maine was charged with an own goal at 40:16 into the first period.
The second half brought a lot of back and forth action, but, due to the soggy field conditions, neither team could do much of anything. Maine would take a heartbreaking loss in the game and Stony Brook would improve its record to 9-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. Maine keeper Ben Piotrowski made two saves while his replacement Giacomo Brunino made one save in the game. Stony Brook outshot Maine 13-6.
The Maine men’s soccer team will compete in its final game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Albany for a 2 p.m. start time.
