Band cancels Alfond appearance 2 days before show

Not since Santa canceled Christmas back in 1964 has there been the level of angst and emotional turmoil amongst the masses as when My Chemical Romance canceled their Oct. 27 University of Maine appearance Thursday night. Unfortunately for us, there was no red-beaked mutant reindeer around to make everything right again.

Men's team drops pair of home games this weekend

The University of Maine men’s soccer team dropped a pair of home games this week as their record fell to 3-12-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in conference play.

On Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field, Maine faced their first opponent, the Vermont Catamounts. There was no scoring in the first half, but in the second half, Vermont was the first to strike.

This weekend, the University of Maine volleyball team faced two America East foes. On Friday, the Black Bears fell to Binghamton but were able to surmount a huge victory against UMBC on Saturday. The win brought their in-conference record to 2-7.

Binghamton arrived in Orono with a respectable 14-14 record, and 5-2 America East standing.

The official trade involved Miami sending Antoine Walker, Michael Doleac and Wayne Simien, with a conditional first-round draft pick, to the Timberwolves for Ricky Davis and Mark Blount.

Three years ago Saturday, the Boston Red Sox ended an 86-year-old curse. This Saturday, they moved to within one win of their second World Series title in four years. Unfortunately, this issue goes to press before Sunday’s game four.

In 2004, the Red Sox won eight straight while displaying a calm demeanor both on the field and off it.

Weekend showers fail to slow down team

Coming into this weekend’s game in Boston, the University of Maine Black Bear football team had endured six straight losses, including two where they blew second-half leads. On Saturday, they weren’t about to have a repeat of the past two games.

Jhamal Fluellen rushed for 126 yards, including the game-winning touchdown, and Landis Williams caught a first-half touchdown to lead UMaine to a 20-14 win over Northeastern University amidst wet conditions at Parsons Field.

The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams got off to a great start in their 2007-2008 season this past Saturday as the women’s team slaughtered the University of Rhode Island, 184-116. The men’s team swam very well but was unable to garner enough wins and fell to URI 185-114.

UMaine geologist Dr. Edward Grew has discovered three new minerals: tassieite, stornesite-(Y), and chopinite. He found these minerals on a four-month trip to Antarctica from 2003-2004.

The nodules that contained the minerals were found in Larsemann Hills, which is along the eastern coast of Antarctica.
