Every year, 20 University of Maine students make it their business to welcome incoming freshmen. These students, officially known as Student Ambassadors or Team Maine, dedicate several weeks in June and August to promoting the UMaine campus and helping first-year students adjust to the challenges of college life.
Complaint of shot fired
Police received a complaint that a shot was fired at Orchard Trails apartments. No injuries were reported. Witnesses reported that the shot was fired around midnight on Saturday. Police said they chased a person into the woods and used a Tazer.
The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team traveled to Northeastern University over the weekend to face off in a two-game series with the Huskies in their first Hockey East matchup of the season.
Maine had a 2-2 record coming into the series and was still carrying momentum from their sweep of Mercyhurst College in the home opener at the Alfond.
Each year, three Maine women who show achievement in arts, politics, education, business or community service are presented with the MaryAnn Hartman award. This year, the recipients were Alicia Anstead, Sally Jacobs and Hannah Price, who, in their own way, have made large contributions to the state of Maine.
The Advanced Engineered Wood Composite Center at the University of Maine has been awarded an additional $2.5 million contract to continue its development of life saving technologies for the combat zone.
The center has been developing a new type of panel, which was unveiled this past March, to be used in tents and other portable structures.
At Thursday’s Socialist and Marxist Lecture Series, philosophy professor Douglas Allen claimed that the structural system of educational institutions promotes hostility, including the way professors relate to their students. Universities working as violent systems was the topic of the lecture.
Aaron Sterling, a University of Maine student and former vice president of Student Government, is running for one of three open seats in the Bangor City Council.
Sterling, who will graduate this December with a double major in public management and political science, is one of six candidates vying for three open spots on the council this election cycle.
A recent issue for students at many colleges and universities across the nation is affordable access to contraceptives on campus.
“I think a lot of efforts are put forth by a lot of different groups on this campus [University of Maine] to make sure there are opportunities offered for students regarding safe sex practices,” Richard Young, Interim Practice Manager for Cutler Health Services, said.
Hilltop Commons will celebrate its grand opening on Wednesday, Nov. 7, after four months of major reconstruction.
“It’s very exciting,” Claire Lint said, assistant dining service manager at the commons. “It’s a fun, student-oriented, customer service kind of place.
When Alvin McNeilly, class agent for the class of 1944, was asked to speak at the Traditions Weekend in the fall of 2006, he was looking to introduce some old traditions to a new class. Speaking to the incoming class of 2010, Alvin challenged the class of “rascals” to step up and exceed his own; perhaps the most generous class the university has seen.
