Cash recouped and students served

Staff Editorial

Tuesday night, Vice President of Student Entertainment Derek Mitchell won a conflict that he was prepared to “fight to the death.” After several days of waiting for a response from representatives of My Chemical Romance, Student Entertainment has been informed that the band will pay them the money lost by their last-minute cancellation.

This is a definite victory for Student Entertainment and kudos should be given to VPSE Derek Mitchell for protecting the interests of the student body. This is the kind of behavior we should expect from our representatives in Student Government.

Student Entertainment, along with Student Legal Services, fought to recoup lost funds in a quick and efficient manner. Despite overall approval on the University of Maine campus, Student Entertainment faced outside pressure, such as petitions from on-line organizations, in addition to Derek Mitchell himself facing personal attacks and threats. Despite the disapproving messages from teenage MCR fans with an internet connection and too much time on their hands, these organizations held strong to their convictions and showed students what an organization that has their best interests at heart looks like. Instead of bending to the whims of Internet outrage, they sought retribution on behalf UMaine students.

Not only has Student Entertainment recouped our money, they now promise another big name to grace the stage sometime in the near future. Student Entertainment has shown the student body that there are individuals who are not afraid to be true advocates of UMaine students even in the face of rabid outsider opinion.
