Much like his architectural counterpart in London, “Big” Ben Bishop has become a landmark – for University of Maine hockey, at least. Despite the Black Bear’s struggles, the third-year goalie has come up as big as his name entails this season and in his career.
One-in-four women will experience some form of unwanted sexual contact, and most of those happen during the first year of college, according to Noel March, chief of police for Public Safety at the University of Maine.
“First-year students, male and female, are often less experienced with new relationships, alcohol use and social situations that might lead to high-risk behaviors such as unplanned or unwanted sexual activity,” March said.
The General Student Senate has distributed more than $750,000 in the past fiscal year, leaving the current budget with less than $2,000.
The money has been spent on a range of projects. Some of these are broad in scope, such as sending Rotaract to provide Hurricane Relief for New Orleans, and some are strictly local projects: $789 for Alpha Phi Omega to buy a T-shirt gun for Bananas the Bear.

The men’s basketball team went into Saturday’s game against Stony Brook looking to gain momentum going into the post-season. Instead, the Black Bears extended their losing streak to four games when they lost this weekend’s game 56-51. The team dropped to 7-20 on the season and 3-11 in conference play.
The University of Maine Center for Teaching Excellence welcomed Dr. Jay Mechling, author and member of the University of California, Davis academic community on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The goal of Mechling’s workshop was to provide UMaine faculty, instructors and teaching assistants a familiarity with the concept of teaching collegiate literacy.
It began with such high hopes. After takeoff, you embark on a ride that lasts for miles, yet seemingly is going nowhere. Finally you start to climb, and climb and then you reach your peak. Just then, time stands still right before you drop 221 feet, arms raised, jubilant, convinced it was all worth it.
