A recent survey conducted by a group of University of Maine students could find college students understand the benefits of tourism and do not mind out-of-state visitors.

The survey assessed Mainers’ attitudes on tourism and will determine, once its results are analyzed, which counties could better educate their residents on the benefits of tourism.

James Lyons’ Student Government presidential term ended on Dec. 9 during the General Student Senate. Lyons says he will look for other things to experience while in college. Lyons is one of three presidents since 2007 to get the position through appointment rather than student elections, he is succeeded by Owen McCarthy.

Domestic violence Police responded to a report of a possible disturbance at an apartment on Connecticut Street at University Park at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7. When officers arrived, a female exited the residence distraught and crying. She said she had been punched in the face by her husband, Ghobad Vermazani, 42, Old Town.

President James Lyons initiated one final resolution before leaving office in the last General Student Senate meeting of 2008. Sens. Abtin Mehdizadegan and Samantha Shulman were officially appointed to cabinet positions as well.

Lyons’ resolution amended the standing rules of student senate so that financial resolutions could not be implemented before Thursday at 9 a.m.

One state's universities pass, but 49 fail to provide affordable education

A new report released by The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education failed 49 of the 50 state university systems for affordability. The single passing institution, the University of California System, received a C-, and the University of Maine System was found to be one of the least affordable systems in the country.
