Competition is what makes our country great, so how did it become such a dirty word?

We choose things everyday. We choose the food we eat, the president we elect, even with whom we will have a family. Choice has taken center stage regarding the future that lies ahead of us. There is no doubt that political corruption is something that should become a personal embarrassment, but what about embarrassment of choosing not to work? Why should we be embarrassed by success?

The point has been made that large pensions should be something we should be ashamed of.

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team let a two-goal lead slip away in the third period of Sunday’s game against the arch-rival University of New Hampshire Wildcats. UNH scored four times in the third period to defeat UMaine. The Black Bears fell to 10-7-2 overall and 5-5-1 in Hockey East, while UNH improved its record to 9-6-3, with a 6-4-2 record in Hockey East.

Keith Anderson Community Center hosts second annual show featuring Maine indies

A curious girl with ample amounts of cartoon cleavage and a robotic arm was seen on campus this week – on posters, trying to reel fans into a Christmas rock show. On Sunday, Dec. 14, the Keith Anderson Community Center will host the second annual Christmas Rock Spectacular.

The transition of power in the White House, marked by the naming of Barack Obama’s cabinet, has been all over the news. President-elect Obama’s brain trust is about half full of the people who will be advising him on how to run the country. Those named so far are not new faces to politics or even thinkers who will bring “change” – all but two of the men and women named were appointees or members of the Clinton administration.

Elizabeth DePoy recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Public Health Association for her work improving health and quality of life for the elderly. She is currently working to provide commercial equipment to help those who need or want more assistance in outdoor activities such as hiking and cross-country skiing. She said her students are the highlight of her career.

UMaine drops decision to Bentley, salvages a tie with PC

It was a weekend of peaks and valleys for the University of Maine men’s hockey team.

The Black Bears dropped a 3-1 decision Friday night to Bentley University of the Atlantic Hockey conference in the first ever meeting between the teams, but returned to the ice Sunday afternoon with a renewed passion and salvaged a tie with the much improved Providence College Friars.
