100+ employers will mingle with students

This year, more than 100 employers will attend the University of Maine’s annual Career Fair in hopes of finding new employees. The Career Fair, organized every year by the UMaine Career Center, is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center.

“When we say all majors, we mean that,” said Cathryn Marquez, Career Center assistant director.

The fair will have employers ranging from the Maine State Police to WLBZ 2. According to Patricia Counihan, the Career Center director, as many as 116 employers have registered for booth space this year.

Last year, more than 1,000 students attended the fair. The number of registered employers is lower this year, but the student turnout is expected to be sizeable.

Katelin Rock, a fourth-year psychology student plans to attend the fair.

“I’m not really expecting to find a job; I’m just looking to see what opportunities are out there and what employers are looking for,” Rock said.

Rock prepared for the event by going to the Career Center to have her resume critiqued.

Courtney Gross, a third-year sociology student, also plans to attend the fair in hopes of getting a general idea of what jobs are available.

“I plan on going online to research the companies that I’m interested in beforehand,” Gross said.

UMaine designs the career fair to let students build relationships with employers by having one-on-one time with them.

Marquez said students should bring an updated resume with them to give to potential employers.

Students should be prepared for follow-up interviews. Some employers will set up interviews with students the next day or later, in February.
