Comic Nore Davis chats after UMaine gig

Every Friday, The Maine Attraction brings a national comedian to the University of Maine. On Jan. 23, Nore Davis spoke his mind on college, gas prices, his family and relationships. His charismatic performance was a blast, but his humor also shined off-stage in a post-show interview. Here’s what went down:

MC: Alright, shot out of a cannon right here. You have to be invincible, a midget or the president for one day. What’s your pick?

Davis: Invicible, a midget or the president? I’ll be invincible, so I can punch the president in his face and I can have a midget as my sidekick. You got to have the midget.

MC: Yeah, they’re great, aren’t they?

Davis: But, I’d definitely be invincible. Nothing can hurt you. I’m a nerd, man. I love comic books and s—. When I was little I would tape sharp pencils on my knuckles and be Wolverine, and he’s invincible. Hell yeah, I used to draw pencil marks on the wall like I’m scratching it [laughs], and he’s invincible so I was like, “Hell yeah, I want to be Wolverine.”

MC: [laughs] Nice. Now you got to fight Mike Tyson, Jet Li or Sylvester Stallone.

Davis: Oh, man [laughs] . Jet Li, Stallone or Mike Tyson. Damn.

MC: Mike Tyson is a cold-blooded man, I don’t know.

Davis: Man, I will punch Mike Tyson right in his face. I’ll fight Mike Tyson because he’s old and he’s done. I would bob and weave and then once I get to that ear [growls] . it’s over baby. I’ll bite him back. I’m a dirty fighter too. I’ll kick him in the balls, I don’t care. But Jet Li, hell no. He kicked DMX’s ass in that movie, so I don’t know.

MC: Well, I don’t think DMX is much of a fighter anyway. He’s off in jail, preaching or doing whatever the hell he does now.

Davis: Yeah, stealing cars and stuff. He gives Yonkers a bad name. It’s a shame. I’m trying to put Yonkers back on the map, because that’s where I’m from.

MC: Who’s the most overrated musician? Who’s way more popular than they should be?

Davis: Um, probably Soulja Boy. I can’t be a hypocrite though. All these people saying that he’s not true to hip-hop, but once they’re in the club, they’re like dancing to it and stuff. It’s a whole other level of hip-hop. But yeah, I think he got too big.

MC: What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Davis: Messing up on stage. I hate that, man.

MC: You ever mess up big time?

Davis: All the time. That’s how you learn. I hate that because I know how to do it, and I know how to execute. I was very happy with my performance tonight though. This is my first time doing like an hour of this s—.

MC: Really? It was pretty awesome.

Davis: Thanks man, I just try to keep it coming and coming.

MC: So I read online that you were on “Yo Mama” on MTV?

Davis: Yeah [laughs].

MC: What’s your best “Yo Mama” joke?

Davis: Oh, it was the one that was on the trailer. It was, “Yo mama is so stupid she went on TRL [Total Request Live] and requested food stamps.”

MC: [laughs] Awesome.

Davis: That was my best one. I love that one. I lost in the end though. S—.

MC: So where are you headed after this? Somewhere warm?

Davis: Yeah. I’m headed back to New York – maybe hit up a party here first. See how the parties are here in the freezing cold. I’m going to Ohio next weekend to a theater out there. I’m just going to keep building my name.
