Women’s Hockey
Durham, N.H. – The University of Maine women’s hockey team was swept by the No. 7-ranked University of New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday at the Whittemore Center. Friday night UMaine fell 3-0, and on Saturday afternoon they fell 5-1. The Black Bears dropped their sixth-straight game, falling to 4-19-2 on the season and 1-11-1 in Hockey East. The Wildcats improved to 13-5-5 overall and 8-2-3 in conference play.
On Friday night, UNH took advantage of some UMaine penalties, scoring their first two goals while on the power play. Sam Faber, Jenn Wakefield and Michaela Long notched goals for UNH.
Senior goalie Genevieve Turgeon turned aside 34 shots, but that was not enough as the Black Bears were unable to muster up much of an attack.
On Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats again pounded the net with 52 shots in the game. Turgeon notched 47 saves, but once again that was not enough as UNH scored four unanswered goals after the first period to win 5-1.
UMaine senior, Jennie Gallo scored her 10th goal of the season 8:38 into the game to give the Black Bears the early lead, but Wakefield scored on the power play late in the first to tie the score at one.
Courtney Birchard scored 8:16 into the second period which proved to be the game-winning goal. The Wildcats added three goals in the third to close out the Black Bears.
UMaine continues conference play Friday afternoon when they host Northeastern for a weekend series. The puck drops at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Women’s Basketball
Orono, Maine – The University of Maine women’s basketball team fell to Boston University on Saturday night 87-72 at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears continued their slide, falling to 2-17 overall and 0-6 in America East play. The first-place Terriers improved to 12-6 and 6-0 in the conference.
Despite three Black Bears recording double-figures (Brittany Boser-14 points, Colleen Kilmurray and Brittany Williams-10 points each), BU’s strong start put UMaine in a hole they could not get out of. The Terriers scored the first seven points in the contest and outscored UMaine 46-25 in the first half.
In the second half, Cindy Blodgett’s squad outscored BU 47-41 and shot 54 percent from the field, but it was not enough as the Terriers stayed unbeaten in America East play.
UMaine resumes play next Saturday when it plays host to Binghamton at 12 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
Men’s Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-The University of Maine men’s hockey team dropped a two-game series to the No. 14 Boston College Eagles at Conte Forum over the weekend. On Saturday night, the Black Bears fell 6-3 and on Sunday afternoon, they lost a 4-1 decision. BC (11-8-3, 7-7-3 Hockey East) extends UMaine’s winless streak to six games. The Black Bears sit in eighth place in Hockey East with an overall record of 10-11-3 and 5-8-2 in conference play.
On Saturday night, Benn Ferriero’s goal 4:09 into the first period gave the Eagles a quick lead, and they never looked back. They put two more unanswered goals on the board before UMaine responded with goals from Brian Flynn and Lem Randall. BC quickly answered with a goal to up the lead to 4-2 before Mike Banwell notched his first-career tally to make it 4-3. The Eagles put the game away though with two unanswered goals to close out the game.
On Sunday afternoon, BC struck first again when Joe Whitney beat goaltender Dave Wilson at 13:17 of the first period. BC added another goal before Banwell answered with his second goal of the weekend to make it 2-1. That was as close as the Black Bears got as BC added two more to win 4-1.
UMaine is back in action next weekend when they host UMass Lowell on Friday night at 7 p.m.
