The University of Richmond came to Morse Field with a 14-game winning streak, a perfect record for the season, a No. 1 ranking and everything to lose. The Black Bears walked onto the familiar turf with confidence after a big road win at Hofstra, eager to show fans and returning alumni that they can hang in there with one of best teams in the Football Championship Subdivision.
For the first half, the Black Hole defense gave the defending national champions all they could handle, going up 14-10 at halftime. After the break, the Black Bears’ second half woes resurfaced and Richmond’s offense took control of the game, scoring four times to win the game 38-21.
Sophomore quarterback Warren Smith completed 35 of his 58 pass attempts for 327 yards and two touchdowns, both to junior wideout Tyrell Jones (9 receptions, 78 yards, 2 TD). Senior Mike Brusko led the team with 92 yards receiving, but Maine rushed only 17 times for 34 yards and Smith’s two interceptions led to ten points for the Spiders, who remain undefeated heading into their CAA matchup with the University of Massachusetts. The Black Bears will have next weekend off as they prepare for a home game against UMass on Halloween night.
