
The Boston College women’s hockey team built a 3-1 lead after starting the third period tied at 1-1, and held off the University of Maine Black Bears for a 3-2 win Friday in the first game of a weekend set at Alfond Arena.
B.C. center Kristina Brown scored the eventual game winner with 12:41 remaining in the game when she beat UMaine goalie Brittany Ott with a wrister in the slot.
The Eagles snapped a 13-game winless streak and improved to 6-15-10 overall and 5-9-4-4 in Hockey East play. UMaine lost their seventh straight game and fell to 6-17-5 (3-12-3-1 WHEA).
UMaine sophomore left wing Myriam Croussette brought the Black Bears back within a goal one minute after Brown’s insurance goal when her wrister from the mid-point got past screened B.C. goaltender Corinne Boyles, but the Eagles weathered UMaine’s final surge with Ott pulled for the final minute.
B.C. center Danielle Welch scored the go-ahead goal 1:08 into the third period when her faceoff win in the right circle found twine.
The Eagles outshot UMaine 10-3 in the final period to finish with a 26-24 edge, after being held to just 16 shots through two periods. B.C. blocked 21 shots in the game, including nine in each of the first two periods.
Boyles made 22 saves to pick up her fifth win of the season. Ott fell to 4-11-3 in a 23-save effort.
Both UMaine goals came on the power play while B.C. was shut out on four chances with the extra skater.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite managing just three shots on goal to UMaine’s seven. B.C. left wing Allie Thunstrom opened the scoring at even-strength10:52 into the game when right wing Ashley Motherwell found her up the middle in transition, and Thunstrom skated uncontested through the left faceoff circle before wrapping a forehand shot around Ott into the far corner.
UMaine capitalized on a power play that carried over from the first period to tie the game at 1-1 just over a minute into the second period. Sophomore left wing Dawn Sullivan finally poked the puck past Boyles on a third effort while Boyles was sprawled out in the crease. Senior defenseman Lexie Hoffmeyer also got her stick on the puck at the net-front to pick up her 13th assist, tying her career high in assists and points (18).
The teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. for UMaine’s Senior Day game, honoring their six seniors in a postgame ceremony.
