UMaine junior defenseman and assistant captain Jeff Dimmen will not start tonight’s game. He appeared to be favoring his leg after a hit along the boards during last night’s game. Freshman forward Kyle Beattie will replace Dimmen in the lineup.

Lowell was ranked 15th in the latest USCHO.com PairWise rankings, which use a mathematical formula to simulate the selection process for the 16 teams that will play in the NCAA Tournament. UMaine is in a three-way tie for 19th in the rankings.

Dave Wilson just led the Black Bears out of the tunnel for the third straight night. His counterpart, Lowell senior goaltender Carter Hutton will also start his third game of the series. The team that has reached two goals in each of the first two games has come out on top. The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament, to be played next weekend at the TD Garden in Boston. UMaine last advance to the semifinals in the 2005-06 season, when they defeated the same River Hawks in the quarterfinals.

To recap, the Black Bears lost their first game on Friday night 2-1. UMass Lowell was 0-12 against UMaine all-time in Hockey East Tournament play heading into the contest. Lowell Senior center and captain Ben Holmstrom broke a 1-1 tie 6:55 into the third period. UMaine outshot Lowell 21-19.
UMaine took Saturday’s game in a decisive 2-0 win, forcing a third game to decide the quarterfinals and giving goaltender Dave Wilson his second career shutout. Sophomore left wing Spencer Abbott scored the game’s first goal 23 seconds into the first period, and junior center and captain Tanner House gave UMaine its second goal 12:45 into the second period on the power play. However, UMaine was unable to capitalize on two instances of five-on-three power play. UMaine outshot Lowell 30-23.
