Bank robbed near UMaine campus

Orono police are investigating a 3 p.m. robbery of the Bangor Savings Bank branch on Park Street, adjacent to the University of Maine campus.

The suspect, who said he was armed, is a 6-foot-tall, approximately 250-pound white male from 30 to 40 years old, who wore a gray T-shirt,  jeans and a dark baseball cap. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, The Bangor Daily News reported.

The newspaper reported that the suspect was last seen heading northeast on Park Street toward Old Town by foot. Police believe he could be driving a U-Haul truck.

The university sent a text message alert to students around 3:32 p.m advising them to “seek safe shelter” because the suspect was at large. A follow-up text message was sent just after 5 p.m., telling students the suspect had most likely left the area and it was safe to resume normal campus activities.

The Orono Police Department is asking for information about the robbery. They can be reached at 866-4451.
