Voters should be wary of experience rather than popularity on election day
With Election Day quickly approaching, and a University of Maine student running for a seat in the State Legislature, it seemed appropriate to send this letter. Walking around campus, it has been hard not to notice the significant amount of people wearing shirts or talking about Zachary Jackman, a republican and a senior at UMaine who is challenging Emily Cain for the district 19 seat in the state house.
Political views aside, it is somewhat disconcerting that a large amount of UMaine students seem to be supporting someone who has almost no political experience, university politics aside. While I understand he is one of our own, I urge voters to consider that fact.
Now is not a time for inexperience. While it may be easy to support someone you know or someone you have seen in class and at the library, that doesn’t mean they should automatically get your vote. Election day is coming fast, but there is still plenty of time to research both the candidates and make a choice based on experience and policy.
