The University of Maine women’s soccer team dropped to .500 after Sunday’s 1-0 loss against Binghamton University.
The game started in the Black Bears’ favor as a corner in the first minute turned into a shot for freshman midfielder Maggie Malone, which was deflected away by Bearcat goalie Carrie Martin.
Both teams ended the game with 12 shots each as the evenly battled game came down to the final minutes.
The Black Bears almost took the lead again in the 74th when Wilson’s corner was headed towards goal by freshman defender Lisa Bijman, but Martin was able to make the save.
In the 81st minute, Bearcat striker Sarah Furminger put Binghamton on top with the only goal of the game. Furminger’s shot from 28 yards out bounced off the post and into the back of the net.
The Black Bears picked up the offense following the goal, adding four shots including one that hit the crossbar, but all attempts came up fruitless.
Senior midfielder Kelsey Wilson led the Black Bears in shots with five, yet ended up pointless for the first time in five games.
Bijman, sophomore forward Josee Descoeurs and junior forward Carolyne Nellis all added two shots for the Black Bears.
UMaine returns home Thursday, Sept. 30 to take on the University of Vermont.
