The University of Maine field hockey team continued their hot streak, winning their fifth in a row over Quinnipiac University 6-1, in a game that was used to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The victory brought the Black Bears to 7-2, while Quinnipiac fell to 2-6.
The Saturday matinee game at the UMaine field hockey complex had goals early and often. Junior forward Jocelyn Mitchell scored her first of three goals on the day just 19 seconds into the game. Mitchell put back the rebound off of junior forward Stephanie Gardiner’s shot.
Mitchell followed that up with a goal off of senior forward Brittney Cummings’ pass.
Mitchell completed a hat trick in less than 15 minutes after putting in another rebound to widen the Black Bears lead to 3-0.
Gardiner added a goal of her own after a string of passes by senior midfielder Mallory Anderson and freshman defender Alexa Binnendijk.
Gardiner kicked off the second half with her second goal, dribbling through the Quinnipiac defense and firing a shot past Bobcat goalie Nicole Lewis for the Black Bears’ fifth goal.
Quinnipiac finally made their way to the scoreboard with a goal by defender Kimberly Cunniff. The Black Bears followed the visitor’s goal with one of their own, as senior midfielder Courtney Veinotte put a rebound into the back of Quinnipiac’s cage.
The Black Bears start conference play next Friday when they host rival University of New Hampshire.
When asked about conference play, Mitchell mentioned that there’s more of a competitive spirit when playing in conference.
“Everything’s more intense,” Mitchell said. “We’re more strategic towards our opponents in our practices, we don’t worry about the basics as much.”
