Club football climbs in ranking

After 2-0 start, UMaine club football stands No. 3 in country

The University of Maine club football team remained undefeated in this young season after beating the Bronx Rebels 8-6 in a come-from-behind victory.

The Rebels jumped out to a halftime lead after a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dexter Bellow was completed to wide receiver Chavaar Warren. The extra point wound up incomplete, and midway through the game the Black Bears were down 6-0.

UMaine came close to putting their first points on the board on their premiere drive of the second half, but quarterback Brett Davison’s pass was picked off at the Rebels’ goal-line.

On the ensuing play, running back Sandy Joseph was stuffed in the end zone by Black Bear defensive end Jeff Langenheim for a safety, narrowing the deficit 6-2.

The Black Bears next possession was the one that gave them the lead, as Davison redeemed himself for the interception and hit wide receiver Jesse Miller on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The Black Bear extra point also wound up incomplete, making the score 8-6.

The Black Bears defense remained stingy when it mattered the most, causing the Rebels to turn the ball over on downs deep in UMaine territory late in the game.

The victory improved the Black Bears record to 2-0, while the Rebels dropped to 1-1. The victory also improved UMaine’s national standing, moving up one spot to number 3 in the National Club Football Association rankings. The Black Bears received two first place votes, and remain a mere 11 points from South Carolina’s top spot.

The Black Bears face Boston University at MIT’s Steinbrenner Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 3.
