The University of Maine club football team suffered their first loss Saturday, succumbing to the undefeated Southwestern Connecticut Community College 30-13. The loss dropped the Black Bears to 4-1.
The Grizzlies led after the first quarter 7-0 on a 22-yard run by running back Darren McNeil.
In the second quarter, the Black Bears tied the score on a Brett Davison pass to wide receiver David Searle.
A large kickoff return by the Grizzlies set up a field goal to bring the score to 10-7 at halftime.
To start the third quarter, Black Bear cornerback Joe Bailey intercepted quarterback Kyle Laurendeu’s pass and raced off to the 42-yard touchdown. The ensuing extra point was blocked, bringing the Black Bear lead to 13-10.
Those points would be the last UMaine would gain, as the Grizzlies gained the lead on their next drive, capped off by an 8-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kevin Sylvester.
The Black Bear offense would struggle in the second half, with Davison getting picked off on three of the next five possessions.
The short field proved costly for the Black Bears, as two rushing touchdowns by Devin Diaz put the game out of reach.
The Grizzlies remained unbeaten and enter the postseason with the No. 1 seed and homefield advantage.
The Black Bears return to action Oct. 30, when they travel to Burlington to take on the University of Vermont.
The matchup between two 4-1 teams has many implications, most importantly who will obtain the No. 2 ranking and homefield in the semifinals of the National Club Football Association playoffs.
